Voivodeship Public Library – Copernican Library in Toruń
The existing Voivodeship Library building was built in the 1970s. We designed a completely new wing in place of the existing reading room. We divided the Copernican Library functionally – we placed the conference area on level -1, and the new reading room with a reference collection on the upper floors. We integrated the new section with the existing lobby into a single structure.
New Wing of the “Book Universe”
The new wing is named “Book Universe,” which includes among other:
– large multi-purpose room,
– study room showcasing the most valuable collections,
– media library,
– reading room with free access to books,
– coworking area,
– board game area,
– meeting, inclusion, and bibliotherapy area,
– green patio.
We arranged the reading room on three mezzanines to form a single, shared, bright space. It is modern and functional place, full of natural light, aesthetic details, and practical solutions.
Furthermore, the dominant and distinctive color element of the facade and interior is Corten steel.
Double skin as ventilation
We equipped the new building with a “double skin.” This allows the air between the walls to utilize the ventilation system. In addition to solar protection, this also ensures good thermal insulation and energy savings. When designing the expansion of the Copernican Library building in Toruń, we tried to implement the most ecological and environmentally friendly solutions possible.
